And another straight-up banger from Rooney!
Look, in all honesty, this took me A WHILE to get into. Mainly because, in a stark departure (in my opinion) from her previous work, Intermezzo focused heavily on romantic and sexual relationships, rather than purely friendships (sometimes where the people are also in love with each other, but Beautiful World Where Are You and Normal People are about friendships first). And I as quite put off by the quite graphic intercourse descriptions. Just not my cup of tea, whatever. But then the conflict between the two brothers developed, becoming clearer and more convoluted as the book went on and then I was hooked. It was painful, confrontational, beautiful. Very real, very personal. Very very good.
It was just what I needed.
I could relate to a lot of the characters, and that made it almost worse, because when you take such an event and place it outside of your perspective, you can suddenly understand and feel all sides of the story. Which somehow you can't when it's your own life. I am fully sincere when I say I needed this book!
Seeing such a complex yet true relationship depicted in literature, and in Rooney's beautiful style as always, was just very nice. I'm sorry I don't have better words for it.

I really think that the book is extremely well-written. I adore that the style changes slightly between the two brothers and the characters are flushed out enough that I dislike them as people, not because they are badly written. So I do still love Rooney's style, but the story is too focused on romantic love for my taste. Maybe the relationship between the brothers will take a more prominent role in the last half of the book? I dunno, I just always adored the way that Rooney wrote friendships and while obviously it is great that she is evolving and branching out, I guess I just miss that in Intermezzo... I think my opinion on the book so far is: really amazing book, just not for me.

I'm definitely enjoying this book so far, but it's. Very long (over 1200 pages in my edition). And that's sort of intimidating me out of reading it – I've been focusing on trying to read at least one chapter per day, but does anyone who's finished it before have any other advice for sticking with it?
