  • Yearning for a good SOB!

Yes - I am looking for a book that will cause me emotional damage and turmoil, something that will make me sob. Like a baby. Usually coming of age novels or anything with a strong sense of family or even scorned lovers, has done this for me. The last book to affect me so emotionally was Almond by Sohn Won-pyung (read last month), and the last book that made me ugly cry was probably ACOMAF (read last year).

Open to all genres. Let me know your recs! The mood reader in me is desperate.

I feel like I'm still waiting for the "real" plot to drop. (Surely this book is not entirely pointless banter?)

anyone else having a hard time connecting with these characters or is it just me? for some reason, the banter is a bit off and the pacing is kind of weird rn… does it get better?

Firstly, thank you to Emily and @rrbooktours for sending me this beautiful deluxe hardcover edition of this debut novel. It’s definitely a prized possession!

ꜰᴏʀ ꜱᴏᴍᴇ, ᴛʜᴇ ᴏɴʟʏ ᴡᴀʏ ᴛᴏ ᴘᴏꜱꜱᴇꜱꜱ ᴍᴀɢɪᴄ ɪꜱ ᴛᴏ ꜱᴛᴇᴀʟ ɪᴛ ꜰʀᴏᴍ ᴏᴛʜᴇʀꜱ.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was so intricately written. I was drawn in from the very beginning - it gave me 𝘵𝘰𝘬𝘺𝘰 𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭 vibes with the introduction of 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 and 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴. It was a genius blend of magical realism and Chinese mythology that covered themes of family, acceptance, perseverance, and sacrifice.

I was surprised with how attached I got to the characters, which I found very well developed, but I did find myself wanting more depth for David and Anna in the later years. With the constant time changes & points of view by chapters, it felt like putting together a puzzle and weaving the pieces of the story together. This is definitely a novel you must take the time to read and enjoy the detailed intricacies and complexities of the writing! The buildup was engaging enough for me to finish this book in 2 days.

Highly recommend this book if you enjoy the following:

Genre: Fantasy/Shapeshifters/ Chinese Mythology • Shapeshifters inspired by Chinese mythology • Multiple POVs and timelines • Mystery and suspense vibes • Morally gray main characters • BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ cast • Complex villains
