this whole pokemon card game thing is pmo so bad I feel like it's getting in the way of the plot and completely has killed the momentum from book 5

what was originally pitched to me as an extremely gossipy book turned into a much deeper study of a city and its inhabitants, revealing quirks, eccentricities, and deeply human stories. oh and it was probably the most gossipy book i've ever read. the author/narrator somehow managed to project a neutrality and objectivity despite obviously learning deep secrets and hidden truths about his subjects. I feel like savannah came alive in a huge way. some difficult period-specific racism/transphobia/homophobia/anti-semitism, but not editorialized or sensationalized by the book in any way. the kind of book that is so human it can only be nonfiction. loved it. the only complaint, although it didn't bother me at all, is that this is pitched as a true crime book about a murder and the murder doesn't happen until halfway through the book!
