Struggling. I think I went in with high hopes after hearing my friends talk about it. It all seems a bit surface level and shallow. The similarities to Hunger Games bothered me a bit too.

Frank Herbert wanted to write a textbook so bad but he wrote this instead. I have to (begrudgingly) admit that this is a masterpiece. The scope of the world, the way the world is built, the detail, the exploration of colonialism and how this interacts with environmental issues, the intersection/separation of religion and politics, the effects of religious fervor on a group of people, the examination of religion as a tool of the oppressor? And then to do that WHILE creating a world entirely from scratch when it's hard enough to explore those themes artfully in a novel about the real world? Insane
And all of that comes at the price of character development, interesting characters, entertaining scenes imo. The characters are interesting, but mostly as archetypes/ideas and not as people. The story is mostly told through dialogue, but with a heavy dose of internal monologue on both sides of the interaction. Frank Herbert's characters feel more like chess pieces than they do people, which is what I think allows him to make this world so massive and the scope of it so huge. It's just not a fun book to read! A breathtaking achievement in science fiction! Just not fun!
