But for most readers it is the characters of the novel who loom the largest: Swann and Odette, Monsieur de Charlus, Morel, the Duchesse de Guermantes, Françoise, Saint-Loup and so many others — Giants, as the author calls them, immersed in Time. Paru en 1923, La Prisonnière est le premier des trois volumes publiés après la mort de Proust et, quoique solidaire, bien sûr, de Sodome et Gomorrhe qui le précède comme d’Albertine disparue qui le suit, une certaine unité lui est propre, entre l’enfermement initial du narrateur et le départ final de la jeune fille. Pour l’essentiel, trois journées simplement se déroulent ici –le plus souvent dans l’espace clos de l’appartement –, et ce sont comme les trois actes d’un théâtre où la jalousie occupe toute la place.

Ξέρουμε σήμερα καλύτερα τις διεργασίες γέννησης αυτού του έργου ζωής, αυτού του απέραντου ποταμού λέξεων που συγκλόνισε τη λογοτεχνία του 20ου αιώνα, στη Γαλλία αλλά και σ' όλο τον κόσμο. Ο αναγνώστης έρχεται εδώ σ' επαφή συνάμα με μια εποποιία της σκέψης, μ' ένα ταξίδι στους λαβύρινθους του κοσμικού, καλλιτεχνικού και διανοητικού στερεώματος της εποχής του Προύστ, με μιαν αξιοθαύμαστη ψυχολογική μελέτη, κι όλα αυτά στην υπηρεσία μιας ανεπανάληπτης γλώσσας. Ξέρουμε επίσης τις περιστάσεις του θανάτου του Μαρσέλ Προύστ, την εγγραφή της λέξης "τέλος" και την υπαγόρευση των τελευταίων φράσεων, την εξάντληση του συγγραφέα από τούτη την αναζήτηση και ανακάλυψη του χαμένου χρόνου. Ξέρουμε ίσως λιγότερο τις περιστάσεις που οδήγησαν στην εμφάνιση της ελληνικής μετάφρασης του έργου: έχουμε να κάνουμε εδώ με τις δυσκολίες, την οξυδέρκεια και τη δύναμη ενός ανθρώπου, μέσα από τις οποίες γεννήθηκε και προσφέρεται σήμερα στους αναγνώστες το "Αναζητώντας τον χαμένο χρόνο".
