I got halfway through this book and thought it to be a miracle that Jack Morgan was not yet on the run and hiding from the police or powerful criminals – little did I know what was on the horizon! I thought this was a little different from other Private novels. Like Jack, I too couldn’t figure out who to trust, and this time I did not predict how it would end. Despite being numerous books into the series, we were able to find out even more about Jack in relation to his faith which is not something I recall ever being mentioned before. It is also interesting to see that he is still being haunted by events in Beijing, Moscow, and Afghanistan, and no doubt he’ll find it difficult to let go of what has happened in Rome. I liked the setting and the way it was written. I felt immersed and could easily imagine the environment in which this story took place. Additionally, the inclusion of the Catholic Church was a perfect choice given the city they were in. This is the first of this series for a while where I feel the location truly mattered and the way in which it was written enhanced the plot as a whole. I liked the new characters that appeared throughout. I hope Faduma Salah makes an appearance should the Private team ever end up in Italy again, alongside Gianna Bianchi as Private’s Italian lawyer. It would be nice if the series does return to Rome at some point so we can get to know Matteo Ricci as a proper established character. The OG team of Justine, Sci and Mo-bot were as brilliant as they normally are, and it was unexpected to have a small cameo from Eli Carver again. I have enjoyed seeing Jack and Justine together again and seeming happy for the last few books, however, I can’t help but feel that that happiness will be shattered in the coming editions. Overall, I continue to adore this book series and look forward to each and every instalment.
