Sixteen years ago, rebellion swept the galaxy known as the Belt of Jewels. Every member of the royal family was murdered--down to their youngest child, Princess Anya--and the Union government rose in its place. But Stacia doesn't think much about politics. She spends her days half-wild, rambling her father's vineyard with her closest friends, Clio and Pol. That all changes the day a Union ship appears in town, carrying the leader of the Belt himself, the Direktor Eminent. The Direktor claims that Princess Anya is alive, and that Stacia's sleepy village is a den of empire loyalists, intent on hiding her. When Stacia is identified as the lost princess, her provincial home explodes into a nightmare. Pol smuggles her away to a hidden escape ship in the chaos, leaving Clio in the hands of the Union. With everything she knows threading away into stars, Stacia sets her heart on a single mission. She will find and rescue Clio, even with the whole galaxy on her trail.

"Worlds may burn and stars may fall, but I will never give up on her. No matter how far away she is, or how impossible to reach, as long as she is waiting at the end of it, my path is clear."
Guys, the friendship. It's beautiful.
This is the type of book I want to read. Why don't we have more of these? And when I say these, I am referring to 2 things: 1) it's about FRIENDSHIP, and that's way more important than romance IMO 2) it's a STANDALONE FANTASY/SCI-FI - it has action, plot twists, character development and everything else and it just shows that you don't need 2 sequels to create a full story.
Last of Her Name is sort of a retelling. It talks about the missing princess Anastasia, or as she is called in this book - Anya Petrovna Leonova. Even though it's set in the future, it still felt as mysterious as the original - also, there were lot's of "Russiany" terms - made up words but they sound Russian XD Anyways, the point is - it still felt like the same story, just in a different setting AND I LOVED IT. The world-building is on point.
There are lots of planets, races, cultures to explore. So many details and none of the info dumps. We gradually get to meet all of the different aspects of their world so it never feels like a lecture. The writing was equally good - it flowed naturally, there were no weird metaphors and you can easily track what's going on and who's who.
What I loved most about the book - beside the friendship - is that it felt like a big adventure. There was lots of traveling through space, visiting other planets. running through crowds trying to lose the bad guys, trying to find out what is really going on, etc. I just love it when I can fully get into the story and feel like I'm there with them *u*
"We become the monsters so the ones we love don't have to."
Another fascinating point of the book was the political intrigue. A war is going on and both sides are equally good - or bad, depends on how you look at it. They all want something and they're willing to sacrifice others to reach that goal. The author did a good job showing how every side has a different story - what they show to others and what's really going on. There's not a single person in this book that is completely and purely good - they make mistakes, they do things they are not proud of - because they are all just human. Some characters you consider good but have ulterior motives. Some characters are shown as evil, but when you find out why they are doing what they are doing, you can actually understand some of it.
"I was born to inherit a legacy of madness"
Stacie. Wow. That girl is seriously badass. There aren't enough words to describe how much I loved her character- She chose her friend over a boyfriend. She risked her life to save her. She did everything in her power to do the right thing even if it meant sacrificing herself. She's also an amazing engineer and mechanic, so there's that.
(Am I the only one getting Raven Reyes vibes from this?)
When it comes to the plot I have to say I was so surprised by the amount of twists. Seriously, the action is non-stop, something is always happening and there's always more to discover. This is officially one of the best books this year and I would definitely recommend if you're up for a space adventure full of amazing secondary characters, teamwork, #squadgoals and of course, great plot.
A fun space romp
This story is billed as inspired by Anastasia Romanov. While the main character is named Anya, and the villain of the story could be inspired by the Romanov’s the comparisons mostly end there. I loved this story it was a lot of fun, and the characters were compelling and flawed.
