This Omnibus Edition collects the five Wool books into a single volume. The first Wool story was released as a standalone short in July of 2011. Due to reviewer demand, the rest of the story was released over the next six months. This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside. Alternate cover for B0071XO8RA

3.5 stars. The show truly was better, with more fleshed out characters, world building and plot points. Would still recommend, and will probably continue reading until Season 2 comes out.
I truly enjoyed this book! I did not put it down, even downloaded it to my blackberry so I could keep reading at work! I look forward to reading more of Hugh Howeys writing, especially if he writes more about the silos!
I wish I had been reading this as the stories were coming out. Because damn. The first short had me absolutely GRIPPED. The twist at the end of the first story had me gasping, so much so, that I literally called my friends (who hate sci-fi) to summarise the story for them so they could be in shock too.
Never had a twist been so well done and what I wouldn’t have GIVEN. To have read these novels as they were coming out in the six months following the short. To see the story coming together as the author just whips up an absolute masterpiece. I know it took me ages and ages to finish but I just wish I could’ve read it how it was originally published or as a physical copy. Because reading it as an audiobook was just so tedious. It took so incredibly long and it just disengaged me from this novel.
I found my initial stupor with the novel wore off and I was beginning to find it a chore to have to continue reading it. Maybe I should find a physical copy and give it another go because I sooo badly want to be able to experience the joy and shock I experienced in the first few chapters throughout the entire novel. Because don’t get me wrong, the author throws you through loops time and time again.
I think I will give it another shot as a physical copy some time and hope that I can connect to the ending better. I loved the characters, the romances, Julia, I loved the world building and I think knowing how it was published lends a different light to why the characters change so much, why the ‘voices’ and narratives change; and why there is sometimes such a jump in what is occurring, thematically and pacing wise.
Aside, I really do recommend this as an absolute staple for anyone who loves sci-fi because it really was stunning. I might come back and edit the review when I do a re-read and probably have more to say, but I do think everyone should read this book- and should try and read it to get into sci-fi or just to have an understanding of the genre.
