    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

So I’m going to compare my thoughts of this book to the first book as well as make some specific comments about the “plot.”

In the last review, I said that the characters were one-dimensional and that I expected to learn more than one trait or distinct thing about them. Did that change in this book? Uhm no not at all. This 409-page book and I didn’t learn anything new about the characters besides one or two new powers that only 2 of them got. When reading a book you want to form a connection with the characters and I felt none of that here. I was hoping my thoughts about the characters would improve this book but here we are.

In the last review I said the plot did not make sense. . . I’ll let you guess if the plot made sense here. . . no it did not. In fact, what plot?? So I’m pretty sure the point of this book was to find their parents which obviously was referred to a couple of times but it honestly felt like there was so much random fluff that I didn’t know what the characters were supposed to be doing besides getting chased and hunted.

Anyway back to talking about the comparisons and trying to find out if I learned anything.

Where do their wings go? I could not tell you. I remember that Max said they are retractable to get tight against their back but this still makes no sense to me. Her wings are 13 feet wide, how in the heck are they not noticeable by everyone??

I said previously that the fight scenes were short and anticlimactic. . . nothing new here to see folks, more anticlimactic fights here.

I said that there was a lot of filler information and it’s the same in this book. It feels like a bunch of unnecessary things happen like school, crushes, a trip to Disney World. . .like that would be great if they had a bigger payoff and these fluff scenes didn’t happen every other page. These moments with the characters would be great if they actually led back to something or had some type of impact that affected their character but it never does.

Also just a little side comment here, these characters are way too trusting of adults with their secret. Max is all the time talking about how they need to be careful that they never know who could be their enemy but good god are they just willing to trust any adult with a nice face. And what doesn’t make sense to me is that the adult never seems to be confused or freaked by the wings. Personally, if I saw a human with wings and knew that something like that wasn’t supposed to exist, I would freak. But no, all of these adults are just like “oh cool moving on.”

Again, Patterson chooses to make his chapters 2 pages long, and for what good reason???? It makes no sense to me and I didn’t realize I would hate it so much until reading his books. His writing is also super simplistic and there are never any descriptive details which are something I like to see when reading. It also seems like Max is sounding way too hard to sound like a teenager, it sounds like a grown man writing a teenager which is unfortunate.

I just wish I had liked the book better overall. I listened to the audiobook again while reading a physical copy and there were a bunch of missing scenes from different pov so be wary of that if you’re choosing to read via audiobook. While I understand why people like the series it very clear I’ve grown out of it. I think I’m going to read the next book as I’m pretty sure it ties up their current issue but I doubt I’ll continue on past that.
