Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring. Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real world and not in Fillory, as they’d hoped. As they struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, they rely on Julia’s illicitly learned sorcery to fight a sinister threat in a world unlike the fantasy novels of their youth.

Listened to this audio book, and found that I enjoyed it more than the first installment. Quentin was less obnoxious and jerky (though just as arrogant and judgy), and he had more of an arc in this one. I've watched seasons 1 and 2 of the Syfy show, so I pretty much knew the basics of Julia's back story. I struggled to care about her though, she somehow seemed to think completely differently from myself, and I was not able to connect.
This one seemed shorter than book 1, and there was more action (it felt), so I overall enjoyed it. Definitely want to read the 3rd, after that ending.
