Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. And his secrets will come to light. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.
tj klune has stated that his inspiration for this book is the sixties scoop, wherein indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and put in residential schools. you can read an interview here: https://whatever.scalzi.com/2020/03/17/the-big-idea-tj-klune/ not only is this story watered down, but also a non-indigenous author profiting off of indigenous history and trauma is unacceptable. as far as i know, he has not taken accountability for this. please research more, and, if you do decide to read it, please read this story carefully.
Hmmm interesting! Very curious about these children and this whole dynamic of documenting (or lack of) magical creatures. Gotta say, author really wants me to know how much literally every character looks down on Linus. It's quite cartoonish in a 'series of unfortunate events' style, or like the dursleys in Harry Potter. Subtlety be damned. But very enjoyable so far
