I love Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, so when I saw this one in a second-hand book shop there was no doubt in my mind, I had to have another Winterson book in my collection. It's a lot like Oranges in that it has side storylines interwoven into the main story.
This book is about love. Heartbreak, affairs, marriages, betrayal, but mainly it’s about love. The frame narrative takes place in a chat room between two people, whose gender is not identified, so it's unclear who these two people are, and what their relationship is. One of them is a writer, and the second person requests stories. And the more the book progresses, the more you get to know the two main characters, but at the same time there are all these short stories that keep you preoccupied.
I love Winterson’s writing, it's so effortless to read. The story keeps you guessing, and when you’ve started to put the pieces together, it switches gear and puts you on another path.
I would recommend this to everyone who loved Oranges, but also to the people who are a fan of contemporary, postmodern novels. I hadn’t heard of this work of hers before, and it’s a damn shame that it isn’t as well-known. I loved it!
