Denver crime-beat reporter Jack McEvoy specializes in violent death. So when his homicide detective brother kills himself, McEvoy copes in the only way he knows how--he decides to write the story. But his research leads him to suspect a serial killer is at work--a devious murderer who's killing cops and leaving a trail of poetic clues. It's the news story of a lifetime, if he can get the story without losing his life.

The Poet is the first book in the Jack McEvoy series. I love the Lincoln Lawyer series by Connelly, so I thought I would give this series a try as well.
It is about a journalist, Jack, who specializes in reporting violent deaths. When his brother commits suicide, McEvoy copes by writing a story. However, his research leads him to suspect a serial killer is at work - a serial killer who is killing cops and leaving behind poetic clues.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It was tense and suspenseful and full of unexpected twists. It showcases how the serial killers are profiled and chased, which I really enjoyed reading. Connelly really showcases his knowledge on crime and investigation techniques. However, my one qualm with this book is that I do not think a reporter would be allowed into and FBI hunt for a serial killer but I guess it is fiction lol.
I wasn’t overly found of the main character, Jack. There wasn’t good character development, and he just kind of annoyed me. William Gladden, who is linked to the case, was very well developed, and his sections of the book were super interesting to read. I also really enjoyed Rachel Walling who works for the FBI.
I’m very excited to jump into the next book in the series to see what crime Jack McEvoy reports on next. I would definitely recommend this book if you like crime novels! If you’re just getting into crime novels, then I would maybe recommend starting with Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer or Harry Bosch series!
