Alternate cover for ISBN 9780425190371 (currently here). The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman. For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...
insta love, insta character growth - how did sally go from "I can't fall in love again" to "Sally Owens knows for certain: fall in love whenever you can" in the span of 30 pages!?
Gillian really just waltzed up in there with a dead body and said "here" 💀

might have been set up to fail here since the movie is so good, and the book is SO different. Instead of following Sally and Gillian, half the book is from Sally's daughters' POVs - and honestly, I understand why the makers of the movie chose to chop them from the storyline. They basically are just teenage girls doing teenage girls things, not much plot to speak of. The writing style is VERY particular. Instead of chapters, the book is split into 3 parts at about 80 pages each. This means pages of dense narration, head hopping around 6+ characters, jumping timelines on the same page. I can see how this is a beloved book, since the pace is slow and cozy, but personally I get bored by useless descriptions and random scenes (example: the amount of space dedicated to the very specific ways in which Sally is a shitty cook?? Like literally a long paragraph of her chopping vegetables for pasta) Lastly: for a book called Practical Magic.. i wanted more magic! and more of the aunts! sadly wont be continuing the series
