This is where the dragons went. They lie... not dead, not asleep, but... dormant. And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly. And presumably, somewhere, there's a key...

Another one I somehow have never reviewed, despite it being one of my favorite books ever. I'm fully incapable of any kind of balanced review of this because this is a book tied to extreme nostalgia as the first Discworld book I ever read and my introduction to the City Watch, which has some of my favorite characters. But here goes...
Guards Guards is the first book in the City Watch sub-series of Terry Pratchett's larger Discworld series. As such, it introduces you to the Night Watch, which are the least respected of an already not terribly respected group in Ankh Morpork. They are a ragtag, tiny group that mostly keeps to themselves to avoid angering the Patrician or the members of the various guilds. But when a dragon starts appearing in the city, the Night Watch gets dragged into the investigation and their captain, Sam Vimes, is determined to get to the bottom of it, whether he's supposed to or not.
As someone who loves detective stories and humor, this book appeals to me on many levels. I'm not sure I'd consider it the best book in the City Watch series but it does a lot of work in terms of setting up some of the main characters(Vimes, Nobby, Colon and Carrot) and introducing readers to Pratchett's humor. It parodies a lot of standard fantasy tropes with fairly flawed but likeable characters. If you enjoy this book, I really can't recommend the rest of the series highly enough. I'm not actually sure how many times I've read this, so like I said, not exactly impartial in my opinions.
