John Sandford

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Lucas Davenport is back with a strange one. The Lieutenant's sanity was nearly shattered by two murder investigations. Now he faces something worse .. two killers, one hideously scarred, the other strikingly handsome, a master manipulator fascinated with all aspects of death. In 'Eyes of Prey' we look into the dark mirror of Davenport's soul. This is the case that will bring him back to life. Or push him over the edge. Librarian's note: the first five books in the Lucas Davenport series are #1, Rules of Prey, 1989; #2, Shadow Prey, 1990; #3, Eyes of Prey, 1991; #4, Silent Prey, 1992; and #5, Winter Prey, 1993.

The books just keep getting better as the series goes on, let me tell ya. This book sucked you in immediately and it kept you prisoner in those pages.

We got to see a lot more humanity and vulnerability in Davenport in this book, and I loved that. He was such a hard-ass and didn't seem to care about his colleagues or relationships in the two pervious books. He also didn't seem to care about his job much.

But this book? Davenport felt everything, and I ate that shit up. The way he latched onto this case and was excited to be a part of it because it was the first time he'd felt any interest in anything for a while was amazing. Sanford wrote his emotions and thought process perfectly.

The killer was also well-written. He was also super weird and disturbing and unpredictable, which is great for the readers, but not so much for the bad guy in question. He was so far definitely the creepiest of the killers.

I will say this, though. Sanford promised me eyeball dissection and eyelid butterflies in the Introduction, and I did not get that, Mr. Author, sir. I was waiting for it. I was so excited to read about this doctor dissecting the eyeballs and it ended up not even being him who did most of the killings. Still a great book, but I must admit that I feel little misled.
