Candace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine. So she barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York. Then Shen Fever spreads. Families flee. Companies halt operations. The subways squeak to a halt. Soon entirely alone, still unfevered, she photographs the eerie, abandoned city as the anonymous blogger NY Ghost. Candace won’t be able to make it on her own forever, though. Enter a group of survivors, led by the power-hungry IT tech Bob. They’re traveling to a place called the Facility, where, Bob promises, they will have everything they need to start society anew. But Candace is carrying a secret she knows Bob will exploit. Should she escape from her rescuers? A send-up and takedown of the rituals, routines, and missed opportunities of contemporary life, Ling Ma’s Severance is a quirky coming-of-adulthood tale and satire.
With all the description of name-brand products and how that reflects on the characters it really gives me American Psycho vibes. Or maybe this is just a common trait of New Yorkers, who knows

Wow! This book wrapped me up! The combination of asian-american heroine + end of world apocalypse + vignettes of her immigrant parents was fresh, emotionally driven, funny and suspenseful. this is probably one of my favorite / most unique books I've read this year.
As always, the memories with her parents made me cry, because it just made me think about my own parents. Surprisingly, her brief conversations with the Shen Zhen suppliers also made me cry.

I loved this book and I can’t even explain why. It follows a girl who just continues to go to work like normal after the entire world falls apart to a virus. It portrays what I believe would really happen if most of the world’s population were to die. Those who lived on would try to continue their lives as normally as possible. Going to work in empty offices, sending emails, and doing their work as normal. It was such a weird book but at the same time, I loved it. Not much happened but it was still fantastic.
