When China invades America, guerrilla warfare explodes on the streets of Los Angeles in this provocative short story about the future of war from Max Brooks, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of World War Z. China thought it would be a quick war, an easy war. But now, years later, as the insurgency on the streets of Los Angeles escalates but the propaganda never changes, a Chinese officer can’t keep silent any longer. Torn between loyalty to his country and loyalty to his troops, he writes a brutally honest—and possibly suicidal—letter home to unmask the truth. Brooks combines his signature meticulous research with unforgettable characters in this landmark work of speculative fiction.

It’s amazing to read a new Max Brooks story! The premise of this short story is a new forever war has been waging for a decade after China invaded the west coast of the USA. It leans into the fear mongering happening right now in geopolitics surrounding TikTok Tok and the race to AI.
This wasn’t my favorite piece by Brooks, but it was a a solid and thought provoking read. Some of it felt silly though when the makeup artists and voice coaches ended up being the key to disarming some of the most lethal tech, yet there was no mention of Watts, Compton, or Skid Row. It felt like an unrealistic imagining by an industry kid.
Still- it was really fun to jump into something new by Brooks.
