Other People's Comfort Keeps Me up at Night

Morgan Parker

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Other People’s Comfort Keeps Me Up at Night is a powerful debut collection from a promising new and necessary voice. Parker’s collection is hyper-contemporary, drawing on what it means to be alive today when our phones autocorrect our texts and we’ve given into a kind of living that prioritizes work, money, and power over justice, equality, and happiness.

Publication Year: 2015

I can recognize that, objectively, these poems are probably good, but I just couldn't get into them. The abstractness here just distanced me and there was nothing I could really connect to, which is kind of what I need when reading poetry. The words came into my brain and didn't really stick and went right back out. There were some lines that I liked, but that's all I can say for this collection.
