Don't Breathe a Word

Jennifer McMahon

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

On a soft summer night in Vermont, 12-year-old Lisa went into the woods behind her house and never came out again. Before she disappeared, she told her little brother, Sam, about a door that led to a magical place where she would meet the King of the Fairies and become his queen. Fifteen years later, Phoebe is in love with Sam, a practical, sensible man who doesn't fear the dark and doesn't have bad dreams - who, in fact, helps Phoebe ignore her own. But suddenly the couple is faced with a series of eerie, unexplained occurrences that challenge Sam's hardheaded, realistic view of the world. As they question their reality, a terrible promise Sam made years ago is revealed - a promise that could destroy them all.

"I don't think we know what we're up against."
    "Stories. Fables. Fairy tales."
"But if people believe in them so strongly, doesn't that give them power? More power maybe than even the truth?"

This book is full of horrible things presented as fantastical things - the way a child would perceive the world if not protected. Anybody who still thinks fairies are being of light and good magic just haven't been paying enough attention to the darker side of fairy lore and if you go into this book expecting it to be a sweet story, by the end, you'll find you were greatly mistaken.

This is the third Jennifer McMahon book I've read, I believe. I love Dismantled and I can't remember much about Promise Not to Tell but this one has intrigued me for years and I am glad to say that I've finally read it. Just be forewarned it has plenty of subtext in regards to plenty of dark topics but it's all just hinted at so I don't want to go into listing out the exact trigger warnings as it pulls from the story. It's all about a family's secrets and the way a story can live on and screw up plenty of people if you believe it without adding a bit of realism to it.
