Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)

Victoria Aveyard

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

This is a world divided by blood—red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance—Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

Predictable but good. I feel robbed of the shock because I heard about the twist, it’s why I wanted to read it in the first place but still worth the read.

    Sigh.

This book was disappointing. I only say that because it was SO HYPED UP and PEOPLE LOVED IT and IT WAS SO GOOD

And it was good but it wasn't the best book I've ever read. Which is what I was seeing when I read the reviews before I read the book.

There are two things I'd like to point out:
    01) If you are going to create a new world, have a map. HAVE A MAP. I enjoy using my imagination, but when you start talking about to the North, East, South, West, all these different lands... it helps to have a map. A MAP

    02) This book was so highly predictable I was a little annoyed. I am the last person on earth to predict anything, so being able to predict large events before they happened made me feel like our author wrote this book thinking her readers might not be able to guess. Guess what. I guessed. There was ONE EVENT I didn't guess in this book that changed the course of everything that happened, and it was at the very end during the "pivotal plot twist".

Otherwise this book was written in typical YA fashion, and I will read the rest of the series when it comes out because I would like to know what happens to our characters. Even if I didn't like those two points up there, that doesn't mean I didn't like the writing style (which did leave a little to be desired but wasn't terrible) or the characters.
