Reminiscent of the edgy, offbeat humor of Chris Moore and Matt Ruff, the first entry in a whimsical, fast-paced supernatural series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Sandman Slim novels—a dark and humorous story involving a doomsday gizmo, a horde of baddies determined to possess its power, and a clever thief who must steal it back . . . again and again. 22000 B.C. A beautiful, ambitious angel stands on a mountaintop, surveying the world and its little inhabitants below. He smiles because soon, the last of humanity who survived the great flood will meet its end, too. And he should know. He’s going to play a big part in it. Our angel usually doesn’t get to do field work, and if he does well, he’s certain he’ll get a big promotion. And now it’s time . . . . The angel reaches into his pocket for the instrument of humanity’s doom. Must be in the other pocket. Then he frantically begins to pat himself down. Dejected, he realizes he has lost the object. Looking over the Earth at all that could have been, the majestic angel utters a single word. “Crap.” 2015. A thief named Coop—a specialist in purloining magic objects—steals and delivers a small box to the mysterious client who engaged his services. Coop doesn’t know that his latest job could be the end of him—and the rest of the world. Suddenly he finds himself in the company of The Department of Peculiar Science, a fearsome enforcement agency that polices the odd and strange. The box isn’t just a supernatural heirloom with quaint powers, they tell him. It’s a doomsday device. They think . . . And suddenly, everyone is out to get it.

This book...I really don't know where to start. It was like somebody took a little bit of monty python and threw it into a bag with six of crows and added a splash of things that go bump in the night with angels and threw it up in the air.
So, yeah, that made as much sense as this book did. It was weird ya'll but in the best way. In the beginning (read the book you'll see what that statement is funny), God flooded the world. He sent an angel to let those that survived know how aggravated he was with them before finishing everyone off. Except the angel lost something important and couldn't finish his job.
Jump to 2015, a small time crook gets himself caught pulling a job and lands in prison. When he is released he is presented with a "job" that he must complete or be taken back to prison. There is also a secret government agency called the Department of Peculiar Science. Everything goes to hell in a handbasket.
Meanwhile, the angel that messed up is still searching for the lost object, just wandering Earth for 4000 + years relying on a malfunctioning mystical map. Two "cults" are also searching for the object in order to "resurrect" their demon of choice.
And there is a mysterious stranger tracking said angel causing havoc and "redecorating earth" on the way.
There is magic and paranormal-ly stuff involved and a really interesting place called Jinx town. There is a ton of snark and craziness and a completely insane plot. There are a lot of old school references (which make me incredibly happy): camel clutch, Fresca, Castle Grayskull, Whitesnake, and Keyser Soze.
I laughed out loud so many times during this book. The main character Coop is something special. I wanted to pick his brain, kick his ass, and hug him all at the same time. If you can't tell by what I've said so far, this book is really hard to talk about. I feel like Inigo trying to explain everything to Wesley "let me explain. No there is too much. Let me sum up." But I can't sum up.
If you like quirky, left of center novels, this might be your jam. If you enjoy main characters that aren't really heroes and can't keep themselves out of trouble, you might like this story. It is not a book that I would normally have picked up but something drew me to it, and I'm so glad I read it!
