This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Maribeth Klein is having a heart attack, she just doesn't realize it. With all that she as going on in her packed schedule, the thought of a heart attack is the last thing she is expecting. She goes about her day: get the twins ready for school, plan dinner for the family, run errands for her job, plan out the week for her job...it's a never ending cycle of to-do for Maribeth.
Lucky for her, she happens to have a doctor's appointment. It is at this appointment that she mentions the heart pain she's having. Testing is done. She has emergency bypass surgery. Time doesn't stop for Maribeth though after she gets out of the hospital. The saying "being a mom is a full time job" is no joke for Maribeth. After trying to heal at home, the unending stress causes Maribeth to make a drastic choice: leave.
She packs up her things. She leaves a note. She just goes. Maribeth knows that the only way to heal is to get away and escape the unending requests and work at home. It's not an easy choice; leaving her kids and her husband, but there doesn't seem to be any other way. Once in Pittsburg, Maribeth finds herself for the first time in a long time being anonymous. No deadlines, no meals to plan, no children to look after...just taking care of herself.
Forman captures the struggles of a working mom. The first part of the story had me grabbing my own chest, the stress that Maribeth is feeling completely overwhelms her and it is directly felt by the reader. I found Maribeth's voice to be authentic and real. Her problems, while I may not have the same ones, still struck a chord with me. The thought of up and leaving ones family is hard to imagine. Even though it was horrifying to me, I was able to see how Maribeth's situation was quickly getting out of control. The need to hit the "restart" button was a must for Maribeth, the only way to start getting herself healthy again. I am such a fan of Gayle Forman, and this title did not disappoint either. I definitely recommend for adult fiction collections. Teen fans will be okay reading this title was well. there isn't anything graphic that isn't already in YA fiction, the subject matter just might not appeal to teens.
