Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A queda do Império Final trouxe a esperança.

"It's easy to believe in something when you win all the time...The losses are what define a man's faith."
I realize I have a problem with the Mistborn trilogy, that I hadn't with Sanderson's other books so far - it takes me a while to get into the book. It happened in the first installment when it took me about 40% in for the story to grip me and then I devoured it, and it happened again here, but this time it took me longer (about 60% in). I think the setup of the novels, so far, takes a little too long for my taste - I understand it's important, plotwise, but it takes me a long while to read, at least until a get into the part where I'll be finally enraptured. I'm a bit afraid to pick the final installment for this first Mistborn trilogy and, more so, for The Way of Kings, because of that. That was one of the reasons that I took one star out of the rating of this one.

I was interested in seeing where the story was going after having defeated the Lord Ruler, and in this Sanderson didn't disappoint - he handled very well the chaos of a transition of power (even if it was for the best), Elend's doubt about being a good ruler and worthy of Vin's love, Vin's doubt about being what Elend needs and how to handle Kelsier's legacy, as well as the nagging feeling that, while destroying the tyranny of the Lord Ruler, they may have unleashed something far worse upon the kingdom. There were new elements, new surprises, a good dose of plot twists, and a good setup for the final installment. Like I mentioned, there was plenty of character development - both Vin and Elend are forced to grow faster here because all the responsibility now rests on their shoulders. That takes its toll on them, but it's also interesting to see how they overcome that.

I have to say, there weren't as many surprising things here like in the first novel, and I pretty much guessed the big reveal about halfway through, but it was something that has the potential to lead to a very grandiose conclusion. Let's see where this goes!
