The Graveyard Book

The Graveyard Book

Neil Gaiman

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead. There are dangers and adventures for Bod in the graveyard: the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer; a gravestone entrance to a desert that leads to the city of ghouls; friendship with a witch, and so much more. But it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family. A deliciously dark masterwork by bestselling author Neil Gaiman, with illustrations by award-winning Dave McKean.

Listened to the audio of this book, which is narrated by Gaiman, and I really enjoyed his performance! He has a great voice.

While I haven't been thrilled with some of Gaiman's other works, this book really was enjoyable. There was a bit of a short-story feel to the first half of the book. like the adventure with the ghoul gate and Ms Lupescu was a short story and so was the adventure out to get the witch a gravestone, as well as Bod's attempt at school. To some extent the first time Scarlett and Bod go down to the Indigo man's place is a short story, though that comes back around later.
I cried at the end when Bod left, and how his mother sang to him!
Also, why didn't Bod's biological family ever become ghosts?

I liked the serious-ness and humor and felt like they struck a perfect balance. I feel like there are some nuggets of truth to be gleaned here, will have to ruminate.
