This, the second title in the hugely popular Inspector Montalbano series, features most everything one could expect from a mystery: secrets, sex, violence, and an interesting protagonist.

Inspector Montalbano works in a fictional town in coastal Southwestern Sicily. Women want him, men want to be like him, etc. This particular series's hook, for me at least, is that Sicilian location. I've spent a lot of time in Sicily, and it ranks among my favorite places on the planet. This book brings to life the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of that magical island, with a particular focus on its gustatorial and oeneological attractions. Author Andrea Camilleri loves to write about food and wine, and one sometimes gets the feeling that he created Inspector Montalbano simply to give him an outlet for this desire. As someone who thinks that Sicilian cuisine, and Sicilian wine, is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy, I am here for it
