We got the synopsis for The House that Seb Built this week, so OF COURSE I had to reread When Rosie Met Jim! For those of you who don’t know, When Rosie Met Jim is a short story focused on the wonderful Jimmy Hailler, a character we first meet in Saving Francesca but is conspicuously absent from The Piper’s Son. The House that Seb Built will feature both Rosie and Jimmy a few years down the track, along with some other characters we haven’t met yet. I’ve missed Jimmy so much, and it was so good to read this short story even just to get a snippet of him. Both times I’ve read this I spent most of my time grinning in glee, it was just so good!
I adore everything Melina Marchetta writes, and this was no exception. For a short story, it was quite detailed and the characters were so multi-faceted, which I’ve come to expect from her writing. I’ve gone through floods and bushfires in the small country town I grew up in, and I was taken back to those experiences when reading this. I loved this so much and I can’t wait to see more of Jimmy, hopefully this year. I’m hoping that because we now have a synopsis, the release date can’t be too far away… 5 stars.
