I am loyal, but I will betray you. I am strong, but I have scars. I am an angel, but the devil. I met her when I was sixteen and she was a breath of fresh air. She swooped in, making me smile. But then she left, taking my next breath with her. Her smile could light up a room, making my black heart pitter patter. I found her again ten years later, with a syringe in her arm. Blood coming from between her legs. She was broken and I was glad she was broken. She wouldn't think less of me and my damaged ways.

Black is the first book in the Black series. Basically, we start with Black when he is 16 and he meets this girl who he thinks is weird but, they form a relationship and grow close until one day she disappears. He never hears from her or sees her again until 10 years later. He now kills people for a living and one day when he is at the local motorcycle club, where he often does “business”, he sees her again. When he sees her she is on drugs and while she is bleeding, I felt that the synopsis was a bit misleading as I thought she had a miscarriage or something to that effect because she was bleeding from between her legs but no she just has a cut. Anyway, the story goes on from there.
I read this in one sitting and it was super easy to read; however, I felt that some parts were missing.
For example, one of my main questions was why did she disappear? We never find out and the question is never asked. While Black may think the question, I don’t recall him ever asking her or if he did she didn’t give an answer. I honestly thought it was weird that Black never asked since he’s so obsessed with her.
I also felt that it was kind of instalove. While it is almost like a second chance romance and they did know each other before, we didn’t really see any of that. We saw one scene of when they first met but nothing after that so it’s kind of hard for me to believe in their love when they’ve been separated for so many years and to be honest, really didn’t seem to know each other that well when they were 16.
Sometimes the characters acted out of character. For example, Black is this killer, we have been told the whole book that he is the best and so many people are scared of him and whatnot. However, when he makes a choice about a certain character he doesn’t actually end up killing this person which was completely opposite to what we’ve learned about Black the entire book.
While I was intrigued with the story, it felt choppy at points and underdeveloped in certain aspects. It leaves off on a cliffhanger and while I would like to know how it continues, I’m unsure about it.
