Lia Riley first came on my radar when I read her short story, Hot Winter’s Night, in the anthology Snowbound at Christmas. I really loved that story and, since it is actually book 3.5 of the series, decided to seek out the first book in the series. Man, I’m glad I found this author and this book.
Sawyer is really quite a sweetheart. There are so many stories where the author shows us the heroine’s insecurities about her looks. It’s not that Sawyer isn’t gorgeous, but since he was tall at a young age he feels a bit like a bull in a china shop when he sees petite Annie. It’s refreshing to read about a man who admits (at least to himself) that he’s not as confident as he tries to project to the outside world. Add to his humble nature the fact that he’s such a gentleman and has a terrific moral compass and I couldn’t help falling in love with Sawyer.
Annie is a mommy blogger. I can’t tell you how much I loved reading Annie’s rough drafts of her blog posts. The author had the edited-out sections that showed Annie’s true feeling versus her blogger persona where everything was sunshine and roses. While I’ve thought about how I’m sure plenty of bloggers I follow don’t give their audience all the nitty-gritty details of their lives, I never really thought about how stressful keeping up that front would be.
As for Annie’s son Atticus, he really piqued my interest. I appreciate the author writing a young boy character who likes the color pink and doesn’t always play like the stereotype of a “boy”. I’m hoping to see more of him and follow him as he grows up to see where it all leads.
