Originally published in 1989. Alex and Edmond. The circumstances that kick off this marriage of convenience are actually funny. Alex sneaks out of a ball to get some air and is kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity. She’s left at Edmond’s house, he’s an Earl of whatever. He finds her hours later.

Alex was brought up by an abusive and fanatical religious father. She’s never had friends, barely allowed outside. She understands zero about society. So there’s a lot of living in denial with Alex. She was resigned to her circumstances but this event pushes her over the edge. Edmond is duty bound to marry her, and he is soooooo nice and kind and rich. Alex hates all of this. I don’t really get her logic in this scenario. She’d rather be a governess than marry a really really nice rich man with a great family. I wanted her ladies maid to lay that shit out.
