Second Debt (Indebted, #3)

Pepper Winters

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

“I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn’t. Jethro isn’t what he seems—he’s the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further.” Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex…sex is her greatest weapon of all. She’s paid the First Debt. She’ll probably pay more. But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win. Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila—he’s found the woman who could destroy him. There’s a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect. The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.

Ms. Winters does it again- she delivers a story beautifully written and leaves you begging for more. I have always been skeptical of the serials; however, she is a master of delivering awesomeness after awesomeness. Her talent at weaving a tale is uniquely unsurpassed in contemporary authors- she has you believing the unbelievable a 600 year old document giving the "Hawks" the right to extract debts from the "Weavers" forever. She is such a good story teller she delivers her punches and keeps you in suspense. Who is good? Who is evil? Who is telling the truth? Will the heroine survive? Is there really a chance of anything? What is the whole debt really about? Nothing is really what seems and there are a lot of players and subplots.
If you are looking for a seriously well written book (s) and the opportunity to dive into a story this is your chance you will not be disappointed. One warning, however, there are some seriously difficult scenes to read it will make you cry, flinch and maybe even wonder your sanity at reading this. Notwithstanding the anguish the reward is there and there is more to come. Wishing the other three books come quickly!
My only disappointment (and I know this is minor) I want the heroine to be smarter and less naive. She needs to toughen up and really start acting like she wants to survive and kick some Hawk ass. I know I am being harsh(and she is scared and alone and has vertigo which is awful) and that she is growing and she will get there, but I am frustrated with how unaware she seems to be and how for a "sophisticated and up and coming designer" she seems to be. I also know that she has lived a very sheltered life so therefore while I want her to have tougher skin I want to also throttle her father and brother for keeping her living in a bubble. I will continue the series because I am addicted to the writing and invested in the tension between the two characters.
