A Ilha do Doutor Moreau

A Ilha do Doutor Moreau

H.G. Wells

I understand now why H G Wells is so beloved by the sci fi genre. His work is truly impressive and the starting point for many other works that exist today in that genre.

In here, Wells decides to explore humanity. What it means to be human and what separates man and animals. And most of all, the devious work of a scientist that has no moral, ethics or a deep understanding of nature. And worst of all, he doesn't care. Moreau is one of the best villains I have read about in a while.

I believe this is also a cautionary tale about the impact humanity has on nature. And how sometimes people don't understand the harm they are causing animals and habitats by trying to humanize them, in a path of good intentions. There is this tendency to think that all needs to be seen under the human scope and that humans are always advanced. We are not. There is no greater disservice to nature than trying to make humanity the center of the universe.
Respect isn't about humanizing animals. Is about understanding them and not ruining their habitats and aspects that took them years to perfect. Sadly, I feel this is a lesson that most of us still haven't quite got.

This suspenseful novel is a must for sci fi fans.
