I enjoyed this story about two twin sisters who are black but very light skinned, so much that people could think they are white. Their story of their lives, and their daughters' lives was very interesting. It made me want to learn more about how black people lived 50 years ago, because it felt real with their treatment and their surroundings. I also really liked how Reese was incorporated.
It is mostly told like a tale, like memories they tell about their lives. At first it felt like it would be more exciting, when Desirée leaves her husband who beat her and he hires a man to collect her, but then they fall in love. I thought there would be some more payoff there but then the husband never checks up on it and goes on to live his life without her and his daughter. I'm not saying it was poorly written, it was really interesting, but sometimes these little thrills did not match what actually happened. It always felt like oh now something big will happen, but then that was just a part of their lives and then nothing is really resolved it's just moved on to the next thing. Another example is Loretta and her family and that whole thing. It's a huge part, but then it's just a chapter in her life.
I feel like this is a book where it does not matter if you know the whole story beforehand. It's just cozy to read about them and knowing their lives does not diminish the story, maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I read it a second time.
