I am so happy that I finally made myself read this one. I have wanted to read it since Rachel on Friends stated that it was her favorite book, and finally!
I was actually a little surprised how much I liked it. It is hard to define. It is filled with different lessons on how to behave, and those lessons might be better suited toward a younger audience. However, the language is too difficult for a younger audience, so I feel like upper teens would be the ones understanding it the best. BUT, would they enjoy it? It is difficult to say. The pacing is really slow, and the things that happen aren't really big things.
I enjoyed all these small events, Amy and her limes, Jo and how she fails in making dinner, Meg's worries about gloves. It is amazing how Alcott was able to write such a lovely story about such trivial things. They may not have been trivial during her time, but it wasn't adventures either.
It is a cute story about four sisters and how they behave toward each other, how they try to become better people, how they have a hard time growing up, and watching their siblings grow up. It was lovely. It is a great book for people that just want stories about people and their lives.
Added 2019. I've just read the newly printed Swedish Easy to read version. It's only abouy 82 pages so it is very short compared to the original. However, it was not that bad. Sure, a lot of the nuance is lost, and their different stories are shortened a lot. BUT I think that for someone new to Swedish, or someone up to 11 years old this could be a good way to read the story the first time.
