It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, the lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
Jackson is one of my favorite authors, and this is (in my opinion) her masterwork. With the heady tension building, beautifully eerie prose, and mysterious cast of characters, it fast became a book I hold close to my heart. I highly related to Eleanor upon first read, and was devastated by the ending--but it made perfect sense, which I appreciate in a tragic end. I love it so much I'm still considering getting a quote of it as a tattoo.
