Joy wants nothing more than to live and Hunt in Apex City without a target on her back. But a dangerous new mission assigned by her uncle, the city's Prefect, may make that impossible. In addition to her new duties as one of the Elite, Joy is covertly running patrols in the abandoned tunnels and storm sewers under Apex Central. With her large pack of magical hounds, she can fight the monsters breaking through the barriers with the strength of three hunters. Her new assignment takes a dark turn when she finds a body in the sewers: a Psimon with no apparent injury or cause of death. Reporting the incident makes Joy the uncomfortable object of PsiCorp's scrutiny—the organization appears more interested in keeping her quiet than investigating. With her old enemy Ace still active in Hunts and the appearance of a Folk Mage who seems to have a particular interest in her, Joy realizes that the Apex conspiracy she uncovered before her Elite trials is anything but gone. As the body count rises, she has no choice but to seek answers. Joy dives into the mysterious bowels of the city, uncovering secrets with far-reaching consequences for PsiCorp... and all of Apex City.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Joy is still reeling from her rise as an Elite Hunter. Ace, who almost killed her, is on lock down and being held in custody. There is no time to waste though, the magical and deadly creatures are still continually threatening Apex City and it is the job of the Elite to make sure that the residents are none the wiser that the problems right at their front door.
Because of Joy's unique 11-hound pack, she is used in ways that other Elite and Hunters are not. This includes special job assignments like the one given to her by her Uncle; patrol the storm sewers and abandoned tunnels eliminating any creatures that might be lurking. What she did not expect would be new and never-before-seen creatures in addition to dead Psimons. When one dead Psimon turns into multiple, all being found by Joy and her pack alone, the blame and suspicion is thrown her way.
will Joy be able to solve the mystery of the Psimons while keeping herself safe? Is the introduction of new creatures something much larger...possibly war?
Lackey picks up right where Hunter left off. Readers are hit with action right from the start. Elite is a fast ride with seemingly endless battles being fought, and issues larger than just Joy and her Elite team clearing out the creatures that are on the loose. Readers will see how Joy grows into her own as part of the Elite team, how the new responsibility she is facing affects everything in her life. Definitely a middle book setting the stage for an all out impending war. Readers that enjoy high fantasy, adventure, and kick-ass female protagonists will enjoy this book. Not quite sure what took me SO long to pick this up in the first place, I enjoyed the first book in the series, and once I started reading this one I was right back in Apex City fighting with Joy.

Yep. Love this series just as much as the first time! I'm not sure if I'm quite ready for book 3 yet, it fucking hurts man. But I'm definitely here for this ride. Just as good the second time around!

It's not often that I just don't take notes because I'm loving a story so much. This was one of those cases. There was just so much fighting and character relationships and political issues going on that I loved just about every darn minute of it.
There was one really obvious continuance error from the first book but I probably wouldn't have caught it if I hadn't read them back to back.
There is some shady crap going down in Apex city, and I can't wait to read the next book and see how it all ends!
