New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with her most explosive Lords of the Underworld tale to date, about a fierce warrior on the brink of sanity who will stop at nothing to claim the exquisite human with the power to soothe the beast inside him… Driven to his death by the demon of Distrust, Baden spent centuries in purgatory. Now he's back, but at what cost? Bound to the king of the underworld, an even darker force, he's unable to withstand the touch of another…and he's quickly devolving into a heartless assassin with an uncontrollable temper. Things only get worse when a mission goes awry and he finds himself saddled with a bride—just not his own. Famed dog trainer Katarina Joelle is forced to marry a monster to protect her loved ones. When she's taken hostage by the ruthless, beautiful Baden immediately after the ceremony, she's plunged into a war between two evils—with a protector more dangerous than the monsters he hunts. They are meant to be enemies, but neither can resist the passion burning between them…and all too soon the biggest threat is to her heart. But as Baden slips deeper into the abyss, she'll have to teach him to love…or lose him forever.

    3.5 stars

I was itching to read another Lords of the Underworld story, but then found this one to be a slow starter for me. I struggled with the first few chapters, no real understanding as to why. The next day, I picked the book up again and got totally immersed. So, I can’t say for sure it wasn’t something to do with my mood or if this really is a slow starter??? I do know that once Baden and Katrina meet, I was much more invested in the story.

The chemistry between Katrina and Baden is great. I wish they weren’t so judgmental of one another in the beginning so they could have offered and accepted comfort from each other sooner. But there were lessons they both needed to learn and trust they both needed to earn.

As usual in this series, there are a lot of other things going on here and there. One of the biggest things being Gillian’s story starting to play now that she’s come of age. And man, it’s not going the direction I had thought it would go. On top of that intrigue, Cameo is finally stepping into the spotlight a bit more (I think her story is next).

Back to the story of Baden, though. I was a bit surprised to have him find his HEA so soon while we’ve been waiting on other storylines to play out for many, many books. At the same time, I liked getting to know him. I didn’t feel a strong connection through a lot of the book and think if he would have interacted with the other Lords more that would have helped. Instead, we are given a lot of Lords that we don’t really know very well. That’s fine since the series is ongoing, but a bit of a let down.

When judging this story on the Baden/Katrina story it is a solid read. I like their connection, I enjoy the introduction of the hell hounds and getting to know Pandora a bit more…although I’m still not a fan. There were ups and downs and, like I said, it kept me engaged once I got into the story a bit.
