The story begins with 32 year-old Rachel Watson commuting from a suburb into London on the train. While on her commutes, Rachel watches outside the window and develops an obsession with the couple who live down the street from Rachel's previous home, Scott and Megan Hipwell. They moved in after Rachel moved out so she does not know them, but calls them Jason and Jess, imagining them to be the perfect couple. In reality, Megan is having an affair with Rachel's remarried husband and has become pregnant. Rachel is an alcoholic who split from her husband, Tom, two years prior, when he was having an affair with another woman. Rachel began drinking because she desperately wanted a child, but was unable to get pregnant. Rachel's drinking was unbearable and made her boring to Tom, so he amused himself by exaggerating and lying about her drunken behavior when she couldn't remember it, as well as by cheating on her. Now living in her college acquaintance Cathy's spare bedroom, Rachel spends her day riding the trains and walking around London. Fired for being drunk at work, she has yet to reveal to Cathy that she's unemployed and living off her savings. Tom still occupies the home they had shared, now living there with his wife and former mistress, Anna, and infant daughter. Rachel is still deeply in love with Tom and calls and emails him at all hours of the night. This leads to tensions with Tom's current wife.
