L'autore
Sofocle (Colono 496 a.C. – Atene, 406 a.C.) è stato un drammaturgo greco antico. È considerato, insieme ad Eschilo ed Euripide, uno dei maggiori poeti tragici dell'antica Grecia.

The latest title to join the acclaimed Greek Tragedy in New Translations series, Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus tells the story of the last day in the life of Oedipus. It was written at the end of the fifth century BCE in Athens, in the final years of the "Golden Age" of Athenian culture, and in the last year of Sophocles' own life. At the center of the play is the mysterious transformation of Oedipus from an old and blind beggar, totally dependent on his daughters, to the man who rises from his seat and, without help, leads everyone to the place where he is destined to die. In the background of this transformation stands the grove of the Furies, the sacred place of the implacable goddesses who pursue the violators of blood relationships. Although Oedipus, who killed his father and married his mother, is an obvious target of the Furies' vengeance, he enters their grove at the beginning of the play, sure that it is the resting place Apollo has predicted for him. The reversals and paradoxes in the play speak to the struggle that Oedipus' life and the action of the play bring vividly before how do we as humans, subject to constant change, find stable ground on which to stand and define our moral lives? Le tre tragedie "tebane" presentate in questo volume non costituiscono una trilogia vera e propria, ma risalgono a momenti diversi della vita di Sofocle: "Antigone", l'episodio conclusivo, è stata scritta per prima, nel 442; "Edipo Re" è di poco anteriore al 425; mentre "Edipo a Colono" è l'ultima opera, rappresentata postuma nel 401. I casi del re di Tebe - inconsapevole assassino del proprio padre e sposo della propria madre, quindi fratello della propria figlia - e della sua discendenza ammoniscono che nell'agire umano è sempre presente un limite; ma insegnano anche che l'uomo resta in ogni caso protagonista della propria vita. Ed è proprio la dualità della natura umana, tesa da un lato all'estatica visione della divinità e coinvolta dall'altro nelle dolorose piaghe dell'esistenza, a costituire il nucleo di questi tre capolavori del teatro classico.

Édipo Rei é uma peça de teatro grega, em particular uma tragédia, escrita por Sófocles por volta de 427 a.C.. Aristóteles considerou esta obra o mais perfeito exemplo de tragédia grega. O termo Complexo de Édipo, criado por Freud, foi inspirado nesta obra e descreve os sentimentos de um menino: desejo pela mãe e ciúme e raiva em relação a seu pai. Édipo é um personagem da mitologia grega, famoso por matar o pai e casar-se com a própria mãe. Filho de Laio e de Jocasta, pai de Etéocles, Ismênia, Antígona e de Polinice. Segundo a lenda grega, Laio, o rei de Tebas havia sido alertado pelo Oráculo de Delfos que uma maldição iria se concretizar: seu próprio filho o mataria e que este filho se casaria com a própria mãe. Por tal motivo, ao nascer Édipo, Laio abandonou-o no monte Citéron pregando um prego em cada pé para tentar matá-lo. O menino foi recolhido mais tarde por um pastor e batizado como "Edipodos", o de "pés-furados", que foi adotado depois pelo rei de Corinto e voltou a Delfos. Édipo consulta o Oráculo que lhe dá a mesma previsão dada a Laio, que mataria seu pai e desposaria sua mãe. Achando se tratar de seus pais adotivos, foge de Corinto. No caminho, Édipo encontrou um homem e sem saber que era seu pai o matou, pois Laio o mandou sair de sua frente. W czasie panowania w Tebach braci - Zetosa i Amfiona, młody królewicz Lajos znalazł schronienie u króla Elidy Pelopsa. Wychowywał się razem z młodszym od siebie synem króla, Chryzypem. Razem uprawiali sport, szczególnie biegi. Szybko piękny Chryzyp stał się obiektem zainteresowań Lajosa. Aż pewnego dnia uwiódł go i zgwałcił, stając się tym samym "wynalazcą" homoseksualizmu w Grecji. Chryzyp nie mógł znieść tej hańby i popełnił samobójstwo, uprzednio ujawniając przyczynę swego czynu. Lajos, obawiając się zemsty Pelopsa, uciekł. Nie ominęła go jednak klątwa. These translations were originally commissioned by the BBC and have been broadcast and acted on stage several times on both sides of the Atlantic. Professor Trypanis has written a new introduction to this volume in which he discusses Sophocles' skill in characterisation, his style and poetry, and the place of the three plays in literary history.
