An interesting short story, which perhaps could have been made into a short novel. A woman of 30, Fanny, has lived away from her first love for 12 years. In the meantime, she has learned manners, better speech, and become a little spohisticated. He, Harry, has stayed working in a furnace. She has decided to come back to marry him, after a few affairs that came to nothing, and although she initially reels from his lack of any initiative, and his basic ways, she decided to stay with him when tested, following an outburst in church of a local gossipy woman. Nicely written, and an easy read.

Written in the years following World War I and set in postwar England and Italy, Aaron's Rod questions many of the accepted social and political institutions of Lawrence's generation, and raises issues as valid for our own time as they were for his. The novel's hero is an Everyman who flees the destruction in England and his failing marriage and who, like Lawrence himself, becomes absorbed in discovering and understanding the nature of the political and religious ideologies that shaped western civilization. Aaron's Rod was completed in 1921 and was censored by both Lawrence's American and English publishers. The Cambridge Edition, based on the only authoritative, surviving typescript, restores these cut passages and eliminates the errors and house-styling of previous editions.The volume contains an introduction that describes the novel's genesis, its transmission, publication history, and reception. Written after the First World War when he was living in Sicily, Sea and Sardinia records Lawrence's journey to Sardinia and back in January 1921. It reveals his response to a new landscape and people and his ability to transmute the spirit of place into literary art. Like his other travel writings the book is also a shrewd inquiry into the political and social values of an era which saw the rise of communism and fascism. On one level an indictment of contemporary materialism, Sea and Sardinia is nevertheless an optimistic book, celebrating the creativity of the human spirit and seeking in the fundamental laws which governed human nature in the past fresh inspiration for the present. This 1997 edition restores censored passages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal for the first time the book Lawrence himself called 'a marvel of veracity'.

She realizes that she cannot with the mind alone, but that she also needs her body to be alive. Told in a blunt style, with explicit descriptions of sex, Lady Chatterly's Lover used language largely unseen in print at that time, which resulted in its banning and the author's censorship. Indeed, the book is perhaps most famous for its publication history. First published in 1928, it was printed privately in Italy. It was immediately banned in both the author's home of England and in the USA. Expurgated, abridged editions were published in the 1930s in the English-speaking world. In 1960, the case R v Penguin Books Ltd prosecuted Penguin Books for publishing the novel under the Obscene Publications Act. The jury found for the defendant, usher in the liberalization of British publishing. In the USA, the book was part of a three-book test case (along with Tropic of Cancer and Fanny Hill), to overturn the ban on obscene imported books first enacted in the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. The US Court of Appeals found in favor of the books in 1959, overturning the ban on the grounds that the books had "redeeming social or literary value." Thus, the original, unexpurgated edition (presented here) finally appeared in English for the first time more than thirty years after it was written. About the author: David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was a prolific writer working in a wide range of styles and forms. A major theme in his work is discussion of the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization, confronting issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behavior. By the time of his death from tuberculosis, he was considered a pornographer who had wasted his talents. Some however, challenged that view. E.M. Forster, writing an obituary of Lawrence, described him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, critics championed his reputation, noting his artistic integrity and moral seriousness, and assigning his fiction to the "great tradition" of the English novel. He is now considered a visionary thinker and a significant representative of modernism in English literature.
