Transcrits et traduits en français par Louis Solo Martinel.Désirant poursuivre ses recherches sur Hearn au Japon, Louis Solo Martinel était venu demander à Sukehiro Hirakawa ses impressions sur la thèse qu'il préparait sur l'œuvre de Hearn. Il lui montra alors la photocopie du carnet et lui recommanda de travailler sur ce nouveau matériel. Martinel, en parcourant ces textes créoles s'écria : « C'est hallucinant ». Ce jeune chercheur martiniquais, en arrivant au pays du soleil levant, trouva un patrimoine culturel de ses ancêtres martiniquais sous cette forme inattendue. Quelle heureuse découverte et quelle heureuse redécouverte de sa langue maternelle d'il y a plus de cent ans. Il se mit immédiatement à l'œuvre et déchiffra les 8 contes, quelques proverbes créoles et d'autres éléments. Puis, il entama la traduction française. Le manuscrit se présente sous la forme d'un carnet dont la couverture porte une mention écrite horizontalement : Contes N 2. Il contient huit contes : Pié-Chique-À, Compè Lapin adans bassin li roi, Zhistouè piment, Tête, Maman Marie, Li roi té ka mandé yon batiment, Ti Poucette, Adèle épi Ti-Jean et quelques morceaux de proverbes, bribes de chansons, haillons de paroles en premières et dernières pages.Ces exemples parmi d'autres témoignent du voyage intertextuel de l'oralité créole : condition exclusive de toute littérature orale. Compère Lapin, Tigre, Éléphant représentent l'héritage culturel africain déporté, transformé, tordu, plié aux besoins de la nouvelle culture créole. Ti Poucette, Ti-Jean constituent l'héritage culturel européen arrivé en terre nouvelle remanié, tordu, plié lui aussi aux besoins de la nouvelle culture créole. Afrique et Europe, les deux plus importants pôles de l'histoire, de la culture en créole.Lafcadio HearnAvant de s'installer définitivement au Japon, Lafcadio Hearn vécut deux ans (1887-1889) à Saint-Pierre, capitale de la Martinique d'avant la tragédie (l'éruption volcanique de mai 1902). Il y accomplit une tâche colossale : recueillir des contes créoles, des bribes de paroles et de chansons populaires, des tim tim (devinettes). Hearn meurt prématurément le 26 septembre 1904, à Tokyo à l'âge de 54 ans. En 1932 paraît un ouvrage posthume intitulé Trois fois bel conte contenant les textes originaux de 6 contes en créole martiniquais qu'il avait recueillis lors de son séjour à Saint-Pierre. En 1988, Sukehiro Hirakawa découvre chez l'un des descendants de Lafcadio Hearn, M. Akio Inagaki, un carnet intitulé : Contes créoles (N°2).

Esta singular obra destaca, entre otras cosas, por su cuidado entelado, cuenta con detalles metalizados en cubierta e ilustraciones desplegables en el interior. Las ilustraciones de Lacombe aportan un registro contemporáneo a la narración oral de Japón mientras descubrimos cómo se constituye una tradición literaria a lo largo de los siglos.
