Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

After the Dance was written as a protest against human cruelty and tyranny. The short story was originally intended to be published in a book to help the Jews affected by the pogrom in Chisinau in 1903. But Tolstoy didn't finish it in time and so the story wasn't published until 1911, the year after his death.

Anna Karenina is the wife of a prominant Russian government official. She leads a correct but confining upper-middle-class existence. She seems content with her life as a proper companion to her dignified, unaffectionate husband and an adoring mother to her young son, until she meets Count Vronsky, a young officer of the guards. He pursues her and she falls madly in love with him. Her husband refuses to divorce her, so she gives up everything, including her beloved son, to be with Vronsky. After a short time, Vronsky becomes bored and unhappy with their life as social outcasts. He abandons her, returns to the military and is immediately accepted back into society. Anna, a fallen woman, shunned by respectable society, throws herself under a train.

Desi Lev Tolstoi a inceput sa lucreze la romanul „Anna Karenina“ in 1873, ideea intrigii i-a venit in 1870, cand s-a hotarat sa scrie povestea unei femei din inalta societate, casatorite, care „s-a dat singura pierzarii”. Intentia autorului a fost sa zugraveasca personajul in asa fel incat sa le trezeasca( cititorilor sentimente de compasiune, insa fara a le parea in vreun fel promiscua sau vinovata. Merita mentionat faptul ca scriitorul a luat-o drept model pentru eroina sa pe Maria Alexandrovna Hartung, fiica lui Puskin, imortalizandu-i astfel trasaturile expresive intr-un portret literar de exceptie. Incordarea si pasiunea cu care a lucrat la acest roman au fost atat de intense, incat Tolstoi l-a terminat, in ciorna, in 50 de zile.
Insa pe tot parcursul procesului creativ, marele scriitor a fost extrem de nemultumit de rezultatul fiecarei zile de lucru. Din acest motiv, atat intriga, cat si personajele au suferit modificari numeroase. Levin, de pilda, nu exista in versiunile initiale ale romanului, aparand ulterior sub numele Ordintev sau Neradov, Vronski se numea Balasev, Gaghin, Udasev, iar Alabin, sotul lui Dolly, cand Stepan, cand Mihail.

Ana Karenjina je roman ruskog pisca Lava Nikolajeviča Tolstoja, koji je prvobitno objavljivan u djelovima od 1873. do 1877. godine. Prva pojava romana je bila u „Ruskom glasniku“, ali nije objavljen do kraja, pošto je Tolstoj došao u sukob s urednikom Mihailom Katkovim oko pitanja koja su pokrenuta u završnom dijelu. Stoga je prva pojava romana u cjelini bila u obliku knjige.
Naširoko smatrana vrhuncem realizma, Tolstoj je ovu knjigu smatrao svojim prvim pravim romanom. Lik Ane je vjerojatno, barem djelomično, inspiriran Marijom Hartung (1832. - 1919.), starijom kćerkom ruskog pjesnika Aleksandra Puškina.
Zanimljivo je i to da je kao prototip za lik grofa Vronskog poslužio pukovnik Rajevski koji je zaista kao dobrovoljac sudjelovao u srpsko-turskom ratu i tamo poginuo.

Renowned Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) had an abiding interest in children and children's literature. He started a school for peasant children on his family's estate, and later founded another, experimental school with the motto, "Come when you like, leave when you like." Fascinated by the simple charm and fresh innocence with which the children of his schools told stories, Tolstoy began writing about his own childhood, emulating the uncomplicated narrative style and disarming directness of the tales told by the children of his acquaintance. After completing WAR AND PEACE, he incorporated these stories in a series of easy readers. Known as THE ABC BOOK (Azbuka) and THE NEW ABC BOOK (Novaia Azbuka), these marvelous readers were widely adopted in Russia and were still in use in the Soviet era. The tales and fables in this charmingly illustrated volume come mainly from these two well-loved primers. Part 1 consists of stories about Tolstoy's own childhood, all told with beautiful simplicity. Part 2 contains Tolstoy's free adaptations of fables from Aesop and from Hindu tradition. Part 3 is devoted solely to his longest and most famous children's work, the fairy tale "Ivan the Fool and His Two Brothers." Never patronizing and often humorous, these small gems reveal Tolstoy's deep appreciation for and understanding of children's artistic and moral sensibilities.

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) commonly referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer - novelist, essayist, dramatist and philosopher - as well as pacifist Christian anarchist and educational reformer. He was the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family. His first publications were three autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856). They tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasants. As a fiction writer Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of 19th-century Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realist fiction. L'idea di Guerra e pace nasce da lontano, quando un Tolstoj ventottenne reduce dalla guerra di Crimea progetta un romanzo sui decabristi, gli aristocratici protagonisti della rivolta del dicembre 1825 che proprio in quell'anno 1856 ritornano, graziati, dalla deportazione. Sennonché Tolstoj si ritrova a cercare sempre più indietro nel tempo la chiave per interpretare il presente, l'idea originaria viene abbandonata, e a partire dal 1863 prende forma l'ambiziosissimo progetto di un'opera corale che abbracci le guerre napoleoniche dal 1805 alla grande epopea del 1812, con l'invasione francese e l'incendio di Mosca, per spingersi con l'epilogo fino al 1820. In sette anni di lavoro intensissimo Tolstoj si documenta, legge monografie storiche, memorie, diari, scava nelle tradizioni famigliari, rielabora la sua esperienza di militare, scrive e riscrive schemi, appunti, varianti: migliaia di pagine. It is told almost entirely from the animals' point of view. Alors que la fin est proche, il saisit dans un sursaut de lucidité l'insignifiance et le ridicule de ses ambitions, de sa soif de richesses. Le coup de génie de Tolstoï dans ces deux nouvelles tient sans nul doute à la création de personnages lisses, incarnations ordinaires et saisissantes de notre incapacité à penser notre propre mort. Deux véritables petits traités de métaphysique, écrits dans une langue simple qui souligne par son dépouillement la révélation des derniers instants.

'Little Girls Wiser Than Men' is a short story by Russian authorLeo Tolstoy first published in 1885. It takes the form of a parable about forgiveness. The story opens at the beginning of Holy Week, when there was still melting snow on the ground. An older girl, Akulya, and a younger girl, Malasha, go outside to play. They both have just been given new frocks, but they insist on wading through one of the puddles from the melting snow. They both take off their shoes to keep them dry, and Akulya warns Malasha against splashing the water on her new frock. Malasha splashes Akulya despite her warning, and Akulya runs home in tears. Her mother is furious at the ruined frock, and she spanks Malasha in the middle of the street. Soon Malasha's mother emerges from her home, and the mothers begin arguing. The shouts brought the peasants into the street, who also begin arguing with each other. The peasants start pushing each other, and Akulka's grandmother urges everyone to stop, but to no avail. I neither asked myself nor her whether she loved me. It was quite enough to know that I loved her. And I had only one fear - that something might come to interfere with my great joy.
After the Dance was written as a protest against human cruelty and tyranny. The short story was originally intended to be published in a book to help the Jews affected by the pogrom in Chisinau in 1903. But Tolstoy didn't finish it in time and so the story wasn't published until 1911, the year after his death.

Escrita entre 1865 e 1869, curioso é notar que foi imediatamente precedida de 'Polikuchka', que escreveu em 1860 e publicou três anos depois. trata-se de uma novela de fundo popular em que toda a sua humanidade vem à superfície, levando-nos a viver as desventuras do pobre Polikuchka como se nossas fossem. É que, em Tolstoi - para empregarmos a expressão de Adolfo Casais Monteiro no sugestivo título de um dos estudos que lhe dedicou -, tudo se passa como se a própria vida falasse.
Alguns exemplares desta edição da Europa-América incluem também, sem identificação do autor, os contos 'O Malaio', 'O Homem dos Olhos Brancos', e 'O Assassinato do Pichel que entorna', originalmente publicados no livro 'Cauchemars', de 1892, do autor francês Jean Richetin.

Acesta este fundalul celor trei Povestiri din Sevastopol, despre care se spune că au ajutat la construcţia celebrului roman Război şi pace. Scrise la sfîrşit de secol XIX, în plin Război al Crimeii, povestirile lui Tolstoi sînt fie reportaj de război, fie eseu despre inutilitatea lui, texte din care transpare plăcerea de a scrie, de a descoperi personaje, de a aduce la lumină adevărul despre lipsa de raţiune a masacrului: „…sau războiul este o nebunie, sau, dacă săvîrşesc această nebunie, oamenii nu sînt deloc fiinţe raţionale, cum obişnuim, cine ştie de ce, să credem”.

Leo Tolstoy's novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich begins shortly after Ivan Ilyich's death. A small group of legal professionals, court members, and a private prosecutor have gathered in a private room within the Law Courts, and while looking through a newspaper one of them reads the following;
“Praskovya Fedorovna Golovina, with profound sorrow, informs relatives and friends of the demise of her beloved husband Ivan Ilyich Golovin, Member of the Court of Justice, which occurred on February the 4th of this year 1882. The funeral will take place on Friday at one o’clock in the afternoon.”
Immediately members of the group begin to think how Ilyich's passing will affect their positions and status; They thank God it didn't happen to them and ponder on the implications of how they might benefit from their colleagues demise, each one of them oblivious of the fact that death will come to them all.
The story takes us back and we see Ivan Ilyich in the prime of his life. He has studied law and is now a judge. He performs his work with a cold discipline and he is a social climber who has become devoid of emotion. He lacks empathy and any concern for his fellow man, seeking only to reach the top where he can look down upon his peers.
One day Ivan has a fall whilst decorating his new house. He sustains an injury and although he doesn't know it, the injury will cause him to become ill and he will die as a result. During his illness he becomes bad tempered and bitter and refuses to believe he is coming to the end of his life.
He gets little sympathy from his family and his only solace are his conversations with Gerasim, a peasant who stays by his bed and gives him honesty and kindness. Reflecting on his current situation and his past life Ivan's worldview begins to change. He realizes the higher he climbed in his noble profession the more unhappy he became, and looking back he realizes how meaningless his life had been.
Slowly Ivan comes to term with his immanent death and finally he sees the light. He begins to feel sorry for those about him busying themselves living a life of habit unable to see how artificial their existence is and that they are not living a good life at all. Finally after his illumination he dies in a moment of exquisite happiness.
The Death of Ivan Ilyich is Tolstoy's attack on the smug satisfaction of a middle and upper class population, who in his mind live artificial meaningless lives, lives of separateness unaware of their creator and what lies before them after death.
Tolstoy's critic Vladimir Nabokov summed it up when he wrote; "The Tolstoyan formula Ivan lived a bad life and since the bad life is nothing but the death of the soul, then Ivan lived a living death; and since beyond death is God's living light, then Ivan died into a new life – Life with a capital L."
