Matsuo Bashō

Here is the most complete single-volume collection of the writings of one of the great luminaries of Asian literature. Basho (1644–1694)—who elevated the haiku to an art form of utter simplicity and intense spiritual beauty—is best known in the West as the author of Narrow Road to the Interior, a travel diary of linked prose and haiku that recounts his journey through the far northern provinces of Japan. This volume includes a masterful translation of this celebrated work along with three other less well-known but important works by Basho: Travelogue of Weather-Beaten Bones, The Knapsack Notebook, and Sarashina Travelogue. There is also a selection of over two hundred fifty of Basho's finest haiku. In addition, the translator has provided an introduction detailing Basho's life and work and an essay on the art of haiku.

In later life Basho turned to Zen Buddhism, and the travel sketched in this volume relfect his attempts to cast off earthly attachments and reach out to spiritual fulfillment. The sketches are written in the "haibun" style--a linking of verse and prose. The title piece, in particular, reveals Basho striving to discover a vision of eternity in the transient world around him and his personal evocation of the mysteries of the universe.

Basho, one of the greatest of Japanese poets and the master of haiku, was also a Buddhist monk and a life-long traveller. His poems combine 'karumi', or lightness of touch, with the Zen ideal of oneness with creation. Each poem evokes the natural world - the cherry blossom, the leaping frog, the summer moon or the winter snow - suggesting the smallness of human life in comparison to the vastness and drama of nature. Basho himself enjoyed solitude and a life free from possessions, and his haiku are the work of an observant eye and a meditative mind, uncluttered by materialism and alive to the beauty of the world around him.

O poema haiku não inferioriza nem zomba, não se serve do intelecto, valoriza as coisas pequenas, valendo-se da surpresa e de um reduzido vocabulário, começa ainda antes da primeira letra da primeira estrofe e acaba muito depois da última sílaba da terceira estrofe. É poesia despersonalizada, já quase fora da linguagem comum, nasce no silêncio, atravessa, como um relâmpago, o olhar do contemplador e regressa ao silêncio; e enquanto existiu pareceu durar o tempo de um movimento respiratório. Un racconto di viaggio può essere molte cose diverse: un semplice rapporto, un portolano, un promemoria, un romanzo di formazione, un taccuino di appunti, magari in forma di disegni, una raccolta di incontri con volti e persone, un reportage, la cronaca di una fuga, persino un canzoniere. Questo di Bashô, è un pellegrinaggio e nel contempo il ritratto più preciso e profondo del Giappone e del suo spirito, che incontra la lingua italiana nella magia della traduzione di Chandra Candiani e Asuka Ozumi. Siamo nel 1688, Bashô è forse il più grande poeta contemporaneo. Il percorso narrato, in realtà solo parte di un itinerario più lungo, dura circa centocinquanta giorni in un territorio all'epoca quasi selvaggio, comunque pericoloso: «ho [...] intrapreso questo pellegrinaggio in terre remote nella consapevolezza della vacuità di tutte le cose, pronto a rischiare la vita»… La scrittura del viaggio, tuttavia, si prolunga per altri cinque anni, durante i quali Bashô, poeta e maestro di poeti, Maestro zen, inquieto e instancabile viandante, ricorda, probabilmente affina e precisa, forse aggiunge, o elimina, un verso, uno haiku, una parola. Insomma, modifica la cronaca diaristica fino a farne opera , composta tanto dal viaggio in un territorio concreto, fatto di natura incontaminata non meno che di monumenti lasciati dagli uomini e di sterminate reminiscenze letterarie, quanto dal racconto del viaggio dentro un'anima. Lo stretto sentiero del profondo Nord – scrive Asuka Ozumi nella sua prefazione – viene considerato il «capolavoro assoluto» di Bashô. «I mesi e i giorni sono eterni viandanti, e così gli anni, che vanno e vengono, sono viaggiatori. Per chi trascorre la vita su una barca, per chi invecchia tirando il morso del cavallo, ogni giorno è viaggio, e il viaggio è la sua casa […] Io pure, da chissà quando, sono stato preso dalla brama di errare, invogliato da una nuvola sperduta sospinta dal vento, e ho vagato per le coste».
