LF: "Things"? It is a title that intrigues that feeds misunderstanding. Rather than a book about things, basically do you not write a book on happiness? G. P: It is there, I think, between the things of the modern world and happiness, one of obligation. L.F: " Les choses " ? C'est un titre qui intrigue, qui alimente les malentendus. Plutôt qu'un livre sur les choses, au fond n'avez-vous pas écrit un livre sur le bonheur ? G. P: C'est qu'il y a, je pense, entre les choses du monde moderne et le bonheur, un rapport obligé. Une certaine richesse de notre civilisation rend un type de bonheur possible : on peut parler, en ce sens, comme d'un bonheur d'0rly, des moquettes profondes, d'une figure actuelle du bonheur qui fait, je crois, que pour être heureux, il faut être absolument moderne. One overcast weekend in October 1974, Georges Perec set out in quest of the "infraordinary": the humdrum, the non-event, the everyday--"what happens," as he put it, "when nothing happens." His choice of locale was Place Saint-Sulpice, where, ensconced behind first one cafe window, then another, he spent three days recording everything to pass through his field of vision: the people walking by; the buses and driving-school cars caught in their routes; the pigeons moving suddenly en masse; a wedding (and then a funeral) at the church in the center of the square; the signs, symbols and slogans littering everything; and the darkness that finally absorbs it all. In An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris, Perec compiled a melancholic, slightly eerie and oddly touching document in which existence boils down to rhythm, writing turns into time and the line between the empirical and the surreal grows surprisingly thin.

Perec przez całe życie próbując odpowiedzieć sobie na pytanie: dlaczego piszę? – robił to, nie tylko tworząc fikcję powieściową, ale również poruszając najróżniejsze, wydawałoby się błahe tematy: wagarów, psychoanalizy, spacerów, okularów, sztuki porządkowania książek i swojego biurka, przepisów kulinarnych, skoków ze spadochronem, biurokracji, pozdrowień z wakacji, snów, free jazzu, historii lipogramu czy biograficznych mistyfikacji. Te wszystkie rozważania spaja ze sobą radość wyliczania i klasyfikowania oraz potrzeba przyjrzenia się miejscom, rzeczom i wydarzeniom codziennym, zwyczajnym, czasem banalnym, czyli temu wszystkiemu, co dzieje się, kiedy nie dzieje się nic.

Człowiek, który śpi jest powieścią jednowątkową. Perec, "nawiązując do pewnego szczególnego okresu w życiu", opowiada historię - swoją własną historię - człowieka, który przerywa studia, wycofuje się z życia, wybija na margines, dobrowolnie zajmuje pozycję outsidera. Zrywa istniejące więzi, unieważnia dotychczasowe parametry czasu i przestrzeni, własną egzystencję sprowadza do niezbędnego minimum, do kilku powtarzalnych gestów zapewniających przetrwanie. [...] Egzystuje jak człowiek skazany na życie. Uczy się samotności, bierności ,milczenia. Ulega iluzji, że można wymknąć się światu, "nie dając ma żadnego punktu zaczepienia". Wreszcie, schwytany w pulapkę zwodniczego poczucia mocy, obezwładniony narastającą rozpaczą, powoli wydobywa się z odrętwienia, próbuje narzucić swej "chwiejnej egzystencji jarzmo nieugiętej dyscypliny". Reguluje sobie życie jak zegarek, ustanawia codzienne rytuały, opracowuje rozkład zajęć, wytycza trasy wędrówek, nie zdaje się na przypadek. Już wie, że "obojętność jest bezużyteczna", że nikt nie może ujść dyktatowi czasu ani historii.

Pisarstwo Georgesa Pereca zasilają dwa potężne impulsy. Z jednej strony zdziwienie, tradycyjnie identyfikowane jako źródło filozoficznego namysłu, ale dla autora Przestrzeni stanowiące naturalną postawę wobec świata, a mówiąc precyzyjnie – wobec każdej drobiny istnienia, która jest tylko o tyle, o ile wydobywa ją z nicości dociekliwe pytanie. Z drugiej zaś strony pragnienie, na dodatek potrójne: trwałości, obecności i pełni. Jeśli żadne z miejsc nie jest nam dane na zawsze, jeśli żadne z nich nie może być dla nas wieczystym punktem odniesienia, jeżeli rzeczy i ludzie gubią się i odchodzą, to jedyną nadzieją są słowa: widmowe szkatułki, w których przechowujemy kawałki zgruzowanego świata, niewyraźne ślady jego obecności, fantomy wypełniające pustkę. Perec niestrudzenie notuje, każdego dnia z tą samą determinacją tworzy rejestr istnienia, włączając do niego osoby, miejsca, przedmioty i zdarzenia. Żyje wyłącznie dlatego, że pisze.
