Uomini e donne in viaggio attraverso l’Europa e attraverso le proprie vite: chi per la prima volta di fronte a una specie di amore, chi alle prese con un ultimo riflesso di idealismo; tutti, però, vittime e carnefici di un cinismo generale. Coral, la piccola dolce ballerina di fila, è attesa da una traballante compagnia inglese in Turchia, e intreccia durante il viaggio una relazione sentimentale carica di illusione. Il dottor Czinner, comunista e sognatore, non crede più che la miccia che vuole accendere prenderà e spera solo che il suo sacrificio ambito abbia degna risonanza. Mabel Warren, cinica giornalista a caccia di uno scoop annibalesco, sa che la sua amante mantenuta Janet la tradirà definitivamente. Il ladro Grünlich approfitta dell’altrui bontà solo per salvarsi la pelle. E via così in un ingarbugliarsi di vite dentro lo spazio affollato degli scompartimenti, mentre il treno scorre sui binari «simile al movimento di una macchina da presa» (Domenico Scarpa, nella Postfazione). E in questo romanzo dall’umorismo impassibile il manovratore di destini Greene è come se leggesse la profezia oscura di quello che accadrà in Europa; nella naturale ineluttabile crudeltà delle persone, nel crescente antisemitismo incontrastato, nel disprezzo esibito dai conformisti verso ogni solidarietà. Chi soccombe del tutto alla fine sono i benintenzionati. Il treno per Istanbul è un classico romanzo entre-deux-guerres. Ma in quei vagoni potrebbe viaggiare benissimo un campione della spaesata umanità di oggi. Lo scavo etico-psicologico, la rappresentazione di una società, costituiscono l’attualità senza tempo dell’opera di Graham Greene.
