تستمد رواية "كتاب الزنوج" عنوانها من وثيقة تسجيل العبيد الأفارقة الرسمية التى حررها موظفو البحرية البريطانية عام 1783، وذلك قبل أن تضع الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية أوزارها بقليل. ولقد تضمنت هذه الوثيقة وثائق السفر لحوالى ثلاثة آلاف من الزنوج العبيد الذين يتطلعون إلى الفرار من نيويورك إلى كندا لكى يصبحوا أحرارًا. وبطلة هذه الرواية واحدة من العبيد وهى الراوى العليم لدى مؤلفها "لورانس هيل"، وتحكى رحلتها كاملة من العبودية إلى الحرية بوقائعها المفزعة أمام مناهضى الرق بدايةً من رفض البريطانيين السماح لعامة الزنوج بالسفر من أراضى المملكة والتزامهم فقط بالسماح بسفر العبيد الواردة أسماؤهم فى "كتاب الزنوج". فى رواية "كتاب الزنوج" يبتكر "لورانس هيل" طرقًا جديدة فى السرد تستوعب كل معاناة العبيد خلال رحلتهم الشاقة والمؤلمة والطويلة نحو الحرية تستوعب – دون سوداوية قائمة – كل المشاهد المؤدية للتعذيب النفسى والجسدى الذى نالوه. ولا يسع القارئ بعد أن يصل إلى نهاية صفحات الرواية إلا أن يردد: يا لها من رحلة! لا يمكن وسمها أو وصفها بغير عنوانها "كتاب الزنوج".
