“I can promise you this. As long as you want me around, I’ll be here to remind you what a beautiful and amazing person you are.” Being a survivor of abuse, a single mom, and not fitting into society's version of attractive– I never thought I would hear those words, especially from someone who was my nemesis on my plant enthusiast message board. So when Jack Kettler, a man much older than I, took notice of me and treated me in a way I had only seen on tv, I couldn’t help but want to open myself up, just one more time. Two weeks – that’s what we agreed to. I would fly across the country to be with Jack for two weeks to see if what we were feeling over the phone was more than just a crush. So what I got when I walked through the small Kentucky airport was not what I expected. One dark secret after another made me question who Jack was, what I was getting myself into, and if what I was feeling in my heart was strong enough to survive what I would have to sacrifice for us to be together.

There are a number of tropes in this book, but to reduce it to the tropes diminishes how great a story this is. This is an age-gap, single mom/single dad romance about two people who have been hurt by those who are supposed to love them (her former fiancé and his father and brothers (not to mention his slimy ex-wife)). Aurora is a plant loving mother from California and she meets Jack, a tough tatted father from Kentucky on an internet message board dedicated to people who love plants. They grow closer over time, talking via text and over the phone. Eventually, Aurora comes to visit Jack at his home. They get even closer, but then another misunderstanding breaks them apart. Aurora keeps talking to Jack's daughter and comes back for a brief visit. Will they be able to get past their drama and misunderstanding and admit their love for each other?
I loved Jack. He was so open and vulnerable a lot while pretending not to be so that he could be strong for Aurora. He treated her with such gentleness and really wanted to go slowly so she would feel safe. I liked Aurora too, I just felt she was a little naive in some of her ideas, but then again, the one time she tried had turned out really badly. I loved them together though, they treated each other so sweetly and she just fit into his family with him and Nikki.
My favorite read of 2022!
I am a huge fan of age gap romances. When you throw in an incredibly relatable heroine and a hero who is now on my never ending list of book boyfriends, you have something that is a great read. I loved Rory & Jack's story. I was rooting for them from the beginning.
There were moments in this book where I was teary eyed because of the way this book was written. The author wrote the emotions that Rory & Jack were going through so vividly, that I felt those emotions myself.
D.J. Krimmer is a new to me author and I will be reading more of their books.
