Straight Boy

Straight Boy

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

When I first met Carter King, I knew he was something special. I imagined us being together, and we are, but only as friends. Best friends! I’m trying to be cool with that, even though I know he has secrets, and there have definitely been mixed signals. I don’t want a crush to ruin what we already have. Then again, if there’s any chance that we can be together, it’s worth the risk, because Carter could be the love of my life. Or he might be the boy who breaks my heart. Straight Boy is Jay Bell’s emotional successor to his critically acclaimed Something Like… series. This full-length novel tells a story of friendship and love while skating the blurry line that often divides the two.

This is naturally a little disappointing to me because it had the potential to be my favorite type of romance. I love a friends to lovers story where one or both characters are exploring their sexuality. This is not that. Carter isn't ever really the love interest in this book because Carter is, as the book title says, straight. Which is fair. And I feel like this book is probably more realistic than all the friends to lovers books where two guys become friends and both happen to be attracted to men. I'm sure it happens often where mlm develop feelings for straight men.

I really liked the relationship that developed between Carter and Andrew anyway. I liked the side characters. I LOVED that Olivia wasn't a bitch. It would have been so easy and so normal and cliche for Olivia to have been some bitch who was jealous and mean and wanted to spend all her time with Carter and "take" him from Andrew. But she's super nice and chill and cool and Andrew likes her too and I was like THANK GOD.

So a little disappointing that it wasn't what I wanted, but that wasn't the books fault. And the ending was RANDOM af. I was like, "Wait what?" And had to rewind the audiobook to make sure I'd heard that correctly.
