Before we started defining novellas by word count, they were defined as being any book less than 200 pages. Source: my Analysis of Short Stories & Literature professor in community college. I loved that class. But he loved James Joyce. So, ymmv, I guess.

A list of books I've read by Indigenous authors (ideally about Indigenous issues or characters) in 2025. Books about Indigenous people/topics written by non-Indigenous authors aren't included here, but anthologies/co-authored books with a mixture of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors are included. For this list, I'm only including authors Indigenous to the Americas, Oceania, and Sápmi, although Indigenous peoples obviously exist in other parts of the world.

Books under 250 pages

For the times you want a short read or need to finish a challenge fast.

All of these are less than 200 pages or no more than 5 hours long. Most are considered novellas, but some short stories have been included as well. No anthologies or collections.

Quick speculative fiction reads (quick, like under 40,000 words).

Might be a doll, or a puppet, of some other seemingly innocent childhood toy, but it is actually pure evil. Automatonophobia at its finest.

Slasher - a subgenre of horror involving a killer or a group of killers stalking and murdering a group of people, often by use of bladed or sharp tools.

This is a big list of (almost) all slasher books (only first books in a series). As long as there is a killer(s), victims and blood, it counts!
