Rose was lit by the sun, her beautiful face giving nothing away. Even back then, she was a mystery that I wanted to solve. The lead homicide investigator in a rural town, Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock is deeply unnerved when a high school classmate is found strangled, her body floating in a lake. And not just any classmate, but Rosalind Ryan, whose beauty and inscrutability exerted a magnetic pull on Smithson High School, first during Rosalind's student years and then again when she returned to teach drama. As much as Rosalind's life was a mystery to Gemma when they were students together, her death presents even more of a puzzle. What made Rosalind quit her teaching job in Sydney and return to her hometown? Why did she live in a small, run-down apartment when her father was one of the town's richest men? And despite her many admirers, did anyone in the town truly know her? Rosalind's enigmas frustrate and obsess Gemma, who has her own dangerous secrets—an affair with her colleague and past tragedies that may not stay in the past.

This book is the first in a series that I cannot wait to continue reading. The story kept me on my toes. I was so anxious to find out who the killer was. The author did an amazing job of giving us red herring after red herring until, we finally learn the truth. I am still shocked by that reveal. That was the one person that I did not suspect. The main character Gemma Woodstock has a rather messy life. She’s cheating on the father of her child with her partner. Her teenage boyfriend committed suicide and she continues to carry the weight of that with her.
As the story unfolds I began to understand why she is the way that she is. As she tries to deal with everything ( the affair and her secrets) a case pops up. The victim Rosalind and Gemma were classmates. We also, learn that Gem was a bit obsessed with her. In order to crack the case, Gemma has to do some serious soul-searching. Her life slowly but surely falls apart. I was satisfied by the ending. This is Sarah Bailey’s first published book and she did a great job in my opinion.
Sarah Bailey did an awesome job writing The Dark Lake. How did I miss the clues. The killer was someone that I least suspected. It took me a while to read the book because I was busy not because the book was boring.
